Who does not know about Nintendo right? Nintendo is one of the most famous gaming companies that has produced tons of games throughout its whole existence. Nintendo was established in 1889, but at that time they did not produce video games, instead they expertise in card games called “Hanafuda”. At that time, the company was known as Nintendo Karuta. In 1977, Nintendo finally published its first ever video console. This is because they were finally able to obtain the legal status to operate as a company in the 1960s. Nintendo, then spread their influence in the video games business by releasing famous consoles and games. Nintendo is famous in its country of origin, Japan, and is very influential there. In 2017, Nintendo released a new console called Nintendo Switch, and later in 2019, they released Nintendo Switch Lite. What’s the difference between these two consoles? Before comparing them, let’s take a look into them one by one.
Released in March 2017 globally, Nintendo Switch is a console that can be used as a hand-held portable console and a home device console. This flexibility is probably why the console is named “Nintendo Switch” because its forms can be switched. Nintendo Switch outsold its predecessor Wii U, and was able to cover up the company’s losses that were due from Wii U. Nintendo also did a smart tactic by releasing their famous game titles for Nintendo Switch, such as Pokemon Sword and Shield, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Animal Crossings and Mario Kart, to boast the sales of the consoles.
Pros of Nintendo Switch
1. It is “switch”-able
As the name suggests, Nintendo Switch can be switched. The console can change from being a hand-held console to a home device console. This trait is specifically unique to Nintendo Switch only. This feature makes the console very flexible and well liked by many. You can either play the console as its own when you are alone or you can connect it to a television and play with your family and friends. This makes you feel like a buy 1 free 1 bargain because you do not need to waste money and buy 2 separate consoles.
Cons of Nintendo Switch
1. It is quite expensive
However, everything has its downside. The price of a Nintendo Switch, unfortunately, is quite expensive. Especially in Malaysia. Even though it is not as expensive as Playstation 4, the price can be considered as pricey. This is possibly due to its ability to become both hand-held and home device console.
Nintendo Switch Lite
Announced in July 2019, Nintendo Switch Lite is a lite version of the Nintendo Switch and was released in September 2019. The console has five main colours and can play almost all of Nintendo Switch’s games. Nintendo Switch Lite was targeted at casual gamers who do not want to spend too much money on a console. Hence, a cheaper version of Nintendo Switch was created. Nintendo went really far to search for cheaper specs in order to create a Nintendo Switch Lite.
Pros of Nintendo Switch Lite
1. It is very portable
Since Nintendo Switch Lite is smaller than the original Switch, it is more portable. You can easily bring this console anywhere you want because it is more compact. Due to the difference in specifications, Switch Lite can last longer than Switch in its battery power. This makes the console a bit superior than the other.
2. It is affordable
The console is also cheaper than Switch. This is because they lowered the specifications of the console. However, this benefits the players who are not hardcore and just want to play games. By being cheaper, the players are able to make sure that they do not waste money in the console only.
Cons of Nintendo Switch Lite
1. It is technically a PSP version of Nintendo
Unfortunately, Nintendo Switch Lite loses the speciality of Nintendo Switch, it is now a hand-held console ONLY. Switch Lite cannot change its form into a home device console. The reason why the console is cheaper is probably due to this factor.
2. Cannot play every Switch games
Sadly, due to being a hand-held only console, Switch Lite also loses the ability to play certain games that require television mode. Hence this console is only targeted for those who really want to play Nintendo only series but cannot afford the Switch.
Comparing The Two Consoles
By looking into both consoles pros and cons, we can conclude that Nintendo Switch is the better purchase between the two. This is because its ability to become two different consoles and have higher specifications. Nintendo Switch Lite may be purchasable if you really have no enough money for Switch. But if you are able to buy Switch, then go for Switch instead because it is more worth it.
